The Department of Geography at the University of Oklahoma has two computer labs: SEC N106 and SEC N108. They are both conveniently located
on the first floor of the Sarkey’s Energy Center (SEC) just off the West Atrium. N106 is the main teaching lab, it has 22 computers
(including the instructor’s). N108 is next door and has 9-10 additional computers. It is departmental policy to teach in only
one of the labs at a time, leaving a place for students to work at all times.
The labs are open 24/7. Access is gained by using the University-provided Sooner OneCard (OU ID Card). Keys are not issued.
OneCards are programmed to open N106 and N108 when a Geography Computer Account is created.
Geography computer accounts are generated for all Geography faculty, staff, and graduate students. Students who enroll in Geography classes
that require use of the labs automatically gain an account. Typically, student accounts are removed from the system when their courses are
over. As a courtesy the department allows Geography majors and minors to retain their accounts until graduation or upon leaving the university.
All questions related to Geography computer accounts should be sent to geog@gcn.ou.edu.
The department buys new computers for the labs on a 2-3 year rotation. The old equipment is rotated out and used by Geography faculty,
staff, and graduate students. We expect a 6-year life out of the computers. We buy high end workstation class computers with large monitors
that can easily handle GIScience and Remote Sensing research and class activities.
Lab software runs on Microsoft Windows XP (SP2). GIS software includes the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcInfo suites. Remote Sensing
software currently in use is ERDAS Imagine. The lab also features complete installs of Microsoft Office. Other software is added or
subtracted as needed for teaching purposes. All computers are internet connected and have Firefox and Internet Explorer installed.
The Department provides access to a high volume printer/copier located in N106. There is also a low volume printer located in N108, but it
is recommended that students use the better printer in N106 when they can.
Geography Computer Labs are paid for by the Technology fees collected by the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences. The EduTech
committee, composed of College of A&GS students, faculty and staff, meet twice yearly to oversee the spending of the Tech Fee.
